Keynote speaker: Joseph Janes

Joseph Janes is Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Academics at the Information School of the University of Washington. A frequent speaker in the US and abroad, he was the Founding Director of the Internet Public Library and the co-author of eight books on librarianship, technology, and their relationship, including Introduction to Reference Work in the Digital Age and writes the "Internet Librarian" column for American Libraries magazine. He holds the M.L.S. and Ph.D. from Syracuse University, and has taught at the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the State University of New York at Albany as well as at Syracuse and Washington.








Maija Berndtson

Helsingin kaupungin kuvapankki / Leif WeckströmMaija Berndtson is the director of Helsinki City Library since 1987. She has held posts as librarian in Helsinki and Deputy Library Director in Espoo. She was the Secretary General of the Finnish Library Association from 1984 to 1987 and Vice President from 1989 to 1991.

Internationally she has been active in different projects within European Union, such as PubliCA, Public Libraries Concerted Action in 1997-1999. She was a member of the International Network of Public Libraries run by the Bertelsmann Foundation 1998-2003. She was jury member of the architectural competition for the new cultural centre of Turin in Italy 2000-2001. She has written many articles in Finnish library journals and authored books and has lectured in many international conferences all over Europe.











Tarja Cronberg

Tarja Cronberg is a Finnish politician and member of Finnish Parliament, representing the Green League. She was first elected to the parliament in 2003 and as the chairperson of her party in 2005. Cronberg is also the director of the Copenhagen Peace Research Institute.
Cronberg has two Ph.D. degrees, in technology (from Lund University, Sweden) and in economics (from Copenhagen Business School, Denmark). Cronberg has worked in various positions in business, education and administration.

Katarina Dorbell
Librarian

Katarina Dorbell has worked with Barnens bibliotek http://www.barnensbibliotek.se (The Cildren's Library)since 1996. Katarina started the site and is constantly developing it. She is working as a consultant at Regionbibliotek Västra Götaland (a regional library in south wetsern Sweden) but her work is for the most part financed by the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs.











Tuula Haavisto
Senior Library Advisor

tuula_.jpgTuula Haavisto is a free lancer librarian, running her own enterprise. She works with international and domestic projects, organises conferences, gives lectures in library education and training and produces and translates texts. Library policy and information society policy are the common focus of her multitude professional activities and interests.

Before her free lancer career, she worked 1987-1997 as Secretary General of the Finnish Library Association. Earlier she worked for several research and special libraries. By education Tuula is librarian and Master of Social Sciences from Tampere University, Finland.









Eero Hyvönen

EeroHyvonen.jpgEero Hyvönen (http://www.tkk.fi/~eahyvone/) is a professor of media technology at the Helsinki University of Technology and a docent of computer science at the University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science. He directs the Semantic Computing Research Group SeCo (http://www.seco.tkk.fi/) specializing, e.g., on the Semantic Web. Current research projects include the "National Ontology Project in Finland" (http://www.seco.tkk.fi/projects/finnonto/). SeCo group has developed, e.g., the internationally awarded semantic portal MuseumFinland (http://ww.museosuomi.fi).










 
Arto Karila
Doctor of Technology (Ph. D)

arto_karila.jpgDr. Arto Karila has since 2001 been an independent consultant and educator in ICT and information security for Finnish and international corporations and governmental customers. Earlier he has, among others, worked as Professor of Computer Science at Helsinki University of Technology, General Manager of the Nordic Countries at Wellfleet Communications (now a part of Nortel Networks), and Director of Service Development at Telecom Finland (now TeliaSonera Finland).

Marja-Leena Länsipuro, a psychologist by her earlier profession,  has worked at the Helsinki City Library on several occasions since 1977. Because of her husband's work she has for long periods lived in several different countries and worked as a volunteer at the libraries of the international schools in Malaysia, Hong Kong and the US. Since 2000 she has been working as a reference librarian at the Töölö library in Helsinki. She is a memeber of the iGS team and the radio team and does reference service also via chat.







Jens Thorhauge
Director General of The Danish National Library Authority

thorhauge.jpgSince 1997, Mr Thorhauge has been the Director General of the Danish National Library Authority, the Danish government's advisory body in library matters. He is responsible for the administration of the Danish library acts and is administrating Denmark's Electronic Research Library. He has also acted as Executive Director of the Danish Library Association and as Head of the department of consultancy and continuing professional education at the Royal School of Librarianship, Copenhagen. Mr Thorhauge is the author and co author of several books and articles on literary and library subjects and has a broad experience of international cooperation.
